Initially, he commands a section of my troops (Archers or Cav, depending on how I'm going), but the longer term goal is to have him as leader of my 2nd party. I did use him as quartermaster for a few early run-throughs (boost to party size), but I think it's better if you just gain that experience yourself. AnandaTheDestroyer.
Bannerlord, like Skyrim, Warband, and hundreds of other PC games is HIGHLY moddable, and we as a playerbase are going to leverage the fact that the developers were gracious enough to include that feature, a feature that is slowly getting harder to find because I think most devs these days are like you seem to be and think modding is a bad thing.
Trade: Buy stuff in bulk (high volume goods like food are actually great for this) and sell it at a profit. As soon as you have the perks that mark your profits, it gets even easier. Buy stuff so it goes from bright green to dim green in the "buy" window, sell stuff until it's no longer bright green in the "sell" window.
This is also a good way to get high level gear to sell. (15k for a horse you cant even use until the late game-At that point you can buy them easy.) Fighting the City gangs in back alleys are also a great way to increase renown, get loot, and above all increase relationships with particular lords. 3- Look into marriages for you and your siblings.

I just trade for the first week, make like 10k then drop trade. Because the prices all start to saturate which makes trading boring as hell. Almost all towns give the same price after a while. That first two weeks though, easy money. Around day 7 jewelry and velvet etc starts spawning. Make sure you're the one who picks it up before those caravans.
Trade bound villages - you can bind villages up to 4-5 castles away from the city if there is no other city from your faction that is closer. For workshops: Being the only one to have a kind of workshop should make it profitable, but it has to have at least one trade bound settlement producing the raw material.
You'll slowly begin to build up your denars. Also, eventually, I know players tend to not like caravans because they struggle to make their own profits sometimes and tend to get captured. But, if you level up your trade skill enough then you can get the perk that generates trade rumors from your caravans.
Pick a workshop that has a "trade bound" village that produces the input you want. For example, flax -> linen, grapes -> wine, animals (hides) -> leather, etc. You can see this when you mouse over the village. Note that villages bound to castles for governance still bring their goods to the town that is their trade bound settlement.
Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord continues a decent Trade level will start to really save money and keep the bank account flowing much more freely. The best place to set up a workshop is a
